Blackbloods

Darkness is a funny thing, does its corruption take root in the flesh? Or in the mind? A question best pondered not over contradicting piles of scholarly articles but in the field, feeling it’s ethereal essence pulsate and writhe. Of all the beings touched by it, few are as defined by it as the vampire.

Since the first of their ilk was conceived by the agonizing consumption of darkness, the vampiric curse has spread far and wide with many variations. Each bloodline seeking some form of domination or superiority over the humans in their area. But most importantly, their power is determined by the concentration of the darkness in their veins. This leads to the older and more powerful among them being referred to as “Blackbloods”.

In my study on these midnight beasts, I’ve witnessed the macabre dance they undergo between feedings, seeming to teeter on the edge of life and death. This has lead to the conclusion that a vampire is not drinking blood for its own sustenance, but to stave off the hunger of the darkness within itself. Should a vampire go too long without drinking blood, its inner darkness will devour it instead out of a hunger for lifeforce.

It then stands to reason that as a vampire grows older and stronger, its body develops a far more symbiotic relationship with that darkness, as despite having more of that darkness, more advanced types of vampires can actually go longer without feeding. Truly a fascinating dichotomy, I shall have to further investigate the source of the relationship between their thirst and darkness.
